How to Set Quarterly Goals That Your Team Can Actually Achieve

Quarterly goals are one of the most effective planning tools a business can use. They are short enough to create urgency and long enough to produce meaningful progress. But most businesses set quarterly goals that are either too vague, too ambitious, or disconnected from daily work. The result is a team that starts the quarter excited and ends it frustrated.

Dr. Connor Robertson at Elixir Consulting Group uses quarterly planning as a core part of the operating system installed for every client.

Start with the Annual Vision

Before setting quarterly goals, you need clarity on where your business is heading over the next year. What does the business look like twelve months from now in terms of revenue, team size, client base, and capabilities? This annual vision provides the context for your quarterly priorities.

Choose Three to Five Priorities

Each quarter, identify the three to five most important initiatives that will move you closer to your annual vision. These should be specific, measurable, and achievable within ninety days. Resist the temptation to take on too much. Focus creates results. Overcommitting creates frustration.

Break Goals into Weekly Milestones

A quarterly goal without weekly milestones is just a wish. Break each goal into the specific actions that need to happen each week. Assign ownership. Track progress in your weekly scorecard and leadership meeting.

Review and Adjust

At the midpoint of the quarter, assess progress. Are you on track? If not, adjust the plan or reallocate resources. Do not wait until the end of the quarter to discover that a goal is off track.
